Dr. Jahanbani received her educational credentials from prestigious institutions:
- B.S.F.S. in International Politics from the Edmund G. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University
- M.A. and Ph.D. in History from Brown University
Professor Jahanbani is a scholar of US foreign relations and global and international history in the 20th century. Her work explores the emergence of "global" thinking in the decades after World War II, the impacts of the global Cold War on US politics, society, and culture, and the intersection of domestic and foreign politics and policymaking. She is particularly known for her research on how American liberals conceptualized poverty as a global problem during the Cold War era, connecting foreign and domestic policy frameworks.
Her scholarly publications reveal a consistent focus on the interplay between American foreign policy and domestic politics during the Cold War. Jahanbani's research demonstrates how concepts developed for international contexts were often applied domestically, particularly in understanding poverty. Her work shows expertise in diplomatic history, intellectual history, and the history of American liberalism, with particular attention to how global thinking shaped US policy approaches in the mid-20th century.
Professor Jahanbani has received numerous prestigious awards for her scholarly and teaching excellence:
- Vice Chancellor for Book Research Publication Award from the Hall Center for the Humanities
- Merle Curti Prize in Intellectual History from the Organization of American Historians
- Center for Presidential History's Distinguished Book Award
- Stuart L. Bernath Prize for Best First Book from the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations
- Chancellor's Silver Anniversary Teaching Award (2009)
- William T. Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence (2023)

Her research has been supported by significant grants from the Charles Warren Center for American History at Harvard University, the Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library, the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, and the Hall Center for the Humanities. She is currently working on a history of "global citizenship" during the Cold War and a digital history project capturing experiences of US international development efforts post-1968. Professor Jahanbani is also a Faculty Fellow at the KU Center for Teaching Excellence, focusing on student engagement and belonging.
Beyond her academic pursuits, Professor Jahanbani has practical experience in policy through internships with the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education & Welfare and the Office of Public Affairs, National Security Council.
