Dr. Sherry McKee is the Albert E. Kent Professor of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine, where she directs the Yale Behavioral Pharmacology Laboratory and serves as Clinical Director of the Forensic Drug Diversion Clinic. She also directs the Yale SCORE Program for Sex Differences in Alcohol Use Disorder. Her work spans clinical trials, behavioral pharmacology, survey research, and epidemiological research focused on treatment development for addictive disorders.
Dr. McKee earned her PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Western Ontario in 1999, followed by a fellowship in Psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine. Her research program focuses on uncovering mechanisms underlying poor outcomes in addictive disorders and translating these findings into improved interventions, with particular emphasis on women and criminal justice populations.
Her work spans multiple disciplines within addiction science, including behavioral pharmacology, clinical trials, epidemiology, and translational research. Dr. McKee has directed large NIH-funded efforts (P50-ORWH/NIDA; P01-ORWH/NIAAA) focused on developing effective medications for addictive behaviors that account for sex differences. She currently leads the Yale-SCORE on Sex Differences in Alcohol Use Disorder (U54AA027989, ORWH/NIAAA), directing an interdisciplinary team conducting cross-species research to accelerate therapeutic development for alcohol use disorder.
Analysis of Dr. McKee's recent publications reveals a strong focus on sex and gender differences in substance use disorders, particularly alcohol and tobacco. Her work spans neurobiological mechanisms, clinical interventions, policy implications, and health disparities. A recurring theme is the examination of how biological sex and gender identity affect disease presentation, treatment response, and outcomes across multiple substance use disorders.

Her work bridges laboratory research with real-world clinical applications to address critical gaps in addiction treatment.
Dr. McKee leads the Yale Behavioral Pharmacology Laboratory, which conducts translational research spanning preclinical studies to clinical trials. She also directs the Yale SCORE Program, which serves as a national resource on women and alcohol, fostering collaboration across multiple disciplines to advance gender-sensitive treatment development.
