Dr. Wu's research centers on group influence over long-lasting behavioral changes and decision processes under resource disparity and social inequality. As a social psychologist and behavioral scientist, she studies the equilibrium of forces—from the individual, the group, and the social environment—that drive long-term behavior and attitudes in the real world. Her groundbreaking work includes two large-scale field experiments conducted with Chinese factory workers and American university staff across 97 work groups and 1,924 workers. These studies demonstrated that increasing voice in groups through brief interventions significantly boosted workers' productivity and shifted attitudes toward authority and justice both within organizations and society more broadly. Current research questions explore how groups motivate enduring behavioral change, how people respond to inequality and hierarchy, the impact of resource scarcity on decision processes, how diversity affects performance, and how to design psychological tools to nudge desirable behaviors.
Dr. Wu's work has received media attention, including coverage in the UCLA Anderson Review regarding her findings on productivity in Chinese factories and their applicability to the U.S. workplace.
Additional Activities:
- Outside academia, she enjoys yoga, meditation, and amateur physics
