Sherrie Wang is a d'Arbeloff Career Development Assistant Professor at MIT, jointly appointed in Mechanical Engineering and the Institute for Data, Systems, and Society (IDSS). Her research focuses on leveraging novel data and computational methods to advance sustainable development, particularly in agriculture and climate change mitigation in low- and middle-income regions. She employs satellite imagery, LiDAR, and crowdsourced data to develop robust machine learning frameworks that address data scarcity and noise challenges.
Before MIT, she was a Ciriacy-Wantrup Postdoctoral Fellow at UC Berkeley, hosted by the Global Policy Lab. She earned her PhD in Computational and Mathematical Engineering from Stanford University, advised by David Lobell. Her work has been featured in venues like Science, IEEE/CVF, and AAAI.
She leads the Earth Intelligence Lab at MIT, which pioneers data-driven solutions for global sustainability. Key projects include crop mapping in Thailand, Clean Water Act compliance via machine learning, and assessing wildfire smoke impacts on Midwestern agriculture. Her research has received coverage in MIT News and on the institution's front page.
