Sherrie L Aspinall

Sherrie L Aspinall is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacy and Therapeutics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. She holds dual roles as National Program Manager and PGY2 Residency Program Director in Medication Use Safety and Policy with the VA Center for Medication Safety (VA MedSAFE), and as a Core Investigator at the Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion (CHERP) at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. Her research focuses on optimizing medication safety, cost-effectiveness, and appropriateness, particularly in vulnerable populations like elderly veterans and nursing home residents. Dr. Aspinall's work spans pharmacoeconomics, outcomes research, and health services research, with a focus on high-risk medications and deprescribing practices.

Education: Holds PharmD and MSc degrees, Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS). Her career includes a VA HSR&D Research Career Development Award (2004) and extensive VA health services research experience since 2002. She directs a PGY2 Medication-use Safety & Policy Pharmacy Residency and mentors pharmacy residents/fellows on research projects.

Research Interests: Medication safety interventions, deprescribing in geriatric populations, high-risk medication prescribing practices, and evaluating clinical outcomes of medication use policies. Recent work addresses anticoagulant safety, bisphosphonate deprescribing in dementia patients, and cost-effectiveness of antibiotic therapies.

Professional Activities: Active presenter at conferences like American Geriatrics Society meetings and International Conference on Pharmacoepidemiology. Leads VA initiatives to standardize medication use safety protocols and evaluates interventions for reducing adverse drug events.
