Shelly Buchanan is a Lecturer at the iSchool, San José State University since August 2014. She earned her Ph.D. from Queensland University of Technology (2018) through the Gateway joint program with SJSU, an M.S. in School Library Media from Portland State University (2012), and a B.A. in English Literature from UC Berkeley (1986), where she also completed teacher certification via the Bay Area Writing Project.
Research Interests focus on Student-Driven Inquiry, Information Literacy, and K-12 Pedagogy. She developed the Student-Driven Inquiry Framework, a model empowering learners to lead their own education. Her work spans school libraries, academic settings, and graduate LIS education.
Teaching Roles include courses like INFO 200 – Information Communities, INFO 233 – School Library Media Centers, and INFO 254 – Information Literacy and Learning. Professional experience includes School Library Director at Arbor School of Arts & Sciences (2019-2023), and prior roles as School Librarian and Instructional Coach in Oregon (2011–2015).
