Shelby L. Hatch is an Associate Professor of Instruction in the Department of Chemistry and a Weinberg College Advisor at Northwestern University. She holds a B.A. from The College of Wooster and a Ph.D. from The University of Rochester. Her research focuses on environmental justice, sustainability, and Youth Participatory Science, particularly examining heavy metal contamination in Chicago communities linked to socio-economic status and race. She teaches undergraduate chemistry courses integrating sustainability and environmental justice, and actively contributes to the Northwestern Prison Education Program (NPEP), developing courses and an open educational resource textbook for incarcerated students.
Shelby has been a lead collaborator on a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant titled Teachers and Students Synergistic Learning Through Youth since 2017. Her work emphasizes community-based research, involving students in all stages of the scientific process. She has taught at Stateville Correctional Center and plans to teach at Logan Correctional Center in 2022. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges chemistry with social justice, advocating for equitable access to scientific education.
