Shelagh Vainker is an Associate Professor of Chinese Art at the University of Oxford and Curator of Chinese Art at the Ashmolean Museum. She is also a Fellow of St. Hugh's College. Her research focuses on the material culture of the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127), particularly the ceramics industry's environmental impact and its role in social relationships between officials, merchants, and consumers. She curates contemporary Chinese art exhibitions and leads projects like the Song Dynasty ceramics book. Her work bridges historical, environmental, and sociological aspects of art.
Research interests include Northern Song ceramics' socio-economic dynamics, environmental implications of ceramic production, and the interplay between urban/rural contexts. She actively engages in museum curation and academic publications.
Publications span exhibition catalogues, edited volumes, and journal articles analyzing Chinese art from historical and contemporary perspectives. Current projects emphasize advancing scholarly understanding of Northern Song material culture and contemporary Chinese art's global presence.
Her academic contributions include groundbreaking studies on Xu Bing, Fang Zhaoling, and Liu Dan, reflecting her expertise in both historical and modern Chinese artistic traditions. She has curated major exhibitions at the Ashmolean, showcasing its Chinese art collections.
