Shelagh McCartney is an Associate Professor at Toronto Metropolitan University and Director of the Together Design Lab and +city lab. She holds a DDes, MDesS, BArch, and BES. Her research focuses on urbanization, housing, and community development, particularly in marginalized regions of Canada’s Near-North and the global South. She emphasizes participatory approaches, working directly with communities to address housing crises and urban growth challenges.

Research Interests: Urbanization dynamics, informal housing, Indigenous housing strategies, participatory planning, and negotiation in contested territories. Her projects include the Nishnawbe Aski Nation Housing Strategy, Yellow Knives Dene First Nation Housing Strategy, and StudentDwellTO, addressing housing equity and community well-being through design and policy.

Teaching and Practice: Prior roles include Assistant Professor at Carleton University, teaching fellow at Harvard, and adjunct roles at Waterloo and U of T. She has led international design projects and won over 20 Canadian design awards. Her teaching philosophy prioritizes critical thinking, community engagement, and systemic change in urban planning.
Labs and Initiatives: Directs the Together Design Lab, focused on collaborative housing solutions, and the +city lab, exploring interdisciplinary urban design in rapidly growing regions.
