Associate Professor Sheila Liming teaches in the Division of Communication & Creative Media at Champlain College, specializing in Writing & Publishing. Previously, she served as Assistant Professor of English at the University of North Dakota (2014–2020). She holds a PhD in Literary and Cultural Studies from Carnegie Mellon University, with a focus on modern American literature and cultural history.
Research & Teaching: Liming’s work centers on Edith Wharton, book history, and the cultural analysis of everyday spaces like libraries and offices. She has published four books, including What a Library Means to a Woman (2020) and Hanging Out (2023), and edited a critical edition of Wharton’s The Age of Innocence. Her digital project EdithWhartonsLibrary.org archives Wharton’s personal library materials.
Awards & Recognition: Liming has received the Teaching Excellence Award (North Dakota University System, 2018) and was a finalist for the Whiting Foundation Public Engagement Fellowship. Her work has been featured in venues like The Atlantic, The New York Times, and Lapham’s Quarterly.
Extracurricular: A skilled Scottish bagpiper, Liming plays traditional music and occasionally performs with the folk ensemble Callán. She offers instruction in both highland bagpipes and Scottish parlor pipes.
