Sheila Blair is the Norma Jean Calderwood University Professor of Islamic and Asian Art at Boston College, retired from the Department of Art History. She specializes in Islamic art, with a focus on Iran, Central Asia, and Mongol-era art, including calligraphy and books. She holds a B.A. from Tufts University and a Ph.D. from Harvard University.
Her research encompasses Islamic art from the 7th century to modern times, with over 200 articles and 17 books, many co-authored with Jonathan Bloom. Notable works include Islamic Calligraphy and Islamic Inscriptions, which won international awards. She contributed to the PBS documentary Islam: Empire of Faith.
Blair's expertise spans Central Asia, West Asia, and art/architecture. She taught courses on Islamic art, urbanism, and the Silk Road. Awards include prestigious prizes from the British-Kuwait Friendship Society and the Iranian Ministry of Culture.
