Dr. Sheereen Majd is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Houston (UH), part of the Cullen College of Engineering. Her research focuses on developing micro- and nano-scale platforms to study molecular processes on biological membranes and create biomimetic systems for drug delivery and biosensing applications. She holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Michigan (2009), with postdoctoral training there before joining UH in 2015.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering (Biomaterials), University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI
- Master’s in Biomedical Engineering (Biomaterials), University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI
- Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering (Solid Mechanics), Amirkabir University of Technology, Tehran, Iran
Research Interests: Her lab explores lipid-based nanomaterials, phase separation in membranes, fusogenic liposomes, and organic semiconductor devices for bioelectronics. Recent work emphasizes optimizing liposome properties for targeted drug delivery and designing biosensors with tunable electrochemical responses. Techniques include multiphoton lithography and 3D printing of functional materials.
Publications: Over 50 peer-reviewed articles since 2008, with recent trends in lipid domain dynamics, charged nanoparticle behavior, and bio-inspired materials. Key areas include membrane enzyme activity metrics and phase-separated lipid systems.
Awards:
- NSF CAREER Award (2018) for membrane-mimicking nanomaterial research
Advising & Grants: Leads the Majd Research Group at UH, focusing on interdisciplinary projects at the interface of engineering and biology. Her NSF CAREER grant supports development of elastic nanomaterials for intracellular delivery.
Labs/Teams: The Majd Lab in the Science & Engineering Research Center (SERC) houses advanced facilities for nanomaterial synthesis, bioelectronic device fabrication, and membrane biology studies. Collaborations span UH’s engineering and medical schools.
