Shayne Aaron Legassie is an Associate Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His work bridges medieval and early modern European studies with interdisciplinary approaches to travel, art, and cultural history. He holds a Ph.D. (2007) and M.A. (2000) in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University, and a B.A. (1999) in English from the University of New Hampshire.
His research explores medieval travel literature, Mediterranean Studies, gender/sexuality studies, ecology, critical theory, and global cinema. His monograph *The Medieval Invention of Travel* (2017) won the SAMLA Studies Book Award. Current projects include *Hollywood Horror and the Gothic Fly*, examining premodern science and theology in horror cinema.
Teaching focuses on comparative literature, early modern studies, and interdisciplinary topics like horror/gothic, myth, and medieval cosmopolitanisms. Courses include 'Literature and the Visual Arts,' 'The Middle Ages in World Cinema,' and 'Literature and Ecology in the Preindustrial World.'
