Shawn Miller

Shawn Miller serves as a Professor of Practice at the University of San Diego School of Law, teaching Civil Procedure, Corporations Law and Technology, Intellectual Property, and Patent Law. He joined USD in August 2019 after roles at Stanford Law School from 2014 to 2019, where he managed the Law, Science and Technology LLM program and served as an IP Research Fellow.

Miller's research focuses on intellectual property law, patent litigation, and the law and economics of innovation. He created the Stanford NPE Litigation Database to categorize patent litigants and has published in top journals such as the Texas Law Review and Stanford Technology Law Review.

As an educator, Miller has advised graduate law students in Stanford's LLM program and led the Patent Troll Policy Practicum, where students presented original research to federal agencies. He continues to mentor students through empirical legal research projects.

Miller founded and leads the NPE Litigation Database project, a collaborative initiative with Stanford's CodeX Center that remains active in advancing empirical studies of patent litigation.
