Dr. Shawn K. Kelly is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University's College of Engineering and Research Biomedical Engineer at VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. He holds S.B., M.Eng., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from MIT.
His research focuses on neural prosthetics, particularly retinal implants for the blind, and includes neural stimulation circuitry, wireless power systems, and hermetic packaging for implantable devices. Kelly's work bridges biomedical engineering, electrical systems design, and translational medical research to restore functional vision.
Publications consistently demonstrate innovations in neural interface technology, including low-power stimulation architectures and hermetic packaging solutions. Recent articles reflect advances in electrode safety monitoring and high-density neurostimulation systems.
- VA Career Development Award (2008)
- IEEE ISABEL Best Paper Award (2009)
Kelly leads development of the Boston Retinal Prosthesis and has received extensive media coverage for breakthrough visual restoration technology. His lab collaborates with MIT, Cornell, and clinical partners to advance neural implant technology.
