Shawkat M. Toorawa is the Brand Blanshard Professor of Near Eastern Languages & Civilizations and Professor of Comparative Literature at Yale University. He holds a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania (1998) and has dedicated his career to interdisciplinary studies in Arabic literary traditions, premodern Islamic texts, and cultural exchanges in the Indian Ocean region.
His scholarly interests span classical Arabic literature of Abbasid Baghdad, Qur’anic hapax legomena, and modern Creole literatures of Mauritius. He has authored/co-authored numerous books including critical editions of medieval works, reference texts on Arabic literary culture, and translations of Qur’anic surahs.
Dr. Toorawa serves as Director of the School of Abbasid Studies and series editor for Resources in Arabic and Islamic Studies. He contributes to editorial boards of journals such as the Journal of Abbasid Studies and Journal of Qur’anic Studies, and is an executive editor of the Library of Arabic Literature initiative.
