Dr. Shauna Devine is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of History at Western University. She earned her PhD from The University of Western Ontario in 2010 and specializes in the social, cultural and military history of the United States, particularly the Civil War era, with a special focus on medicine and science during and after the war.
Professor Devine's research centers on how the American Civil War transformed medical science and practice. Her work examines the innovations developed by physicians in response to wartime medical challenges and how these innovations laid foundations for modern American medicine. She is currently researching medical practice in the Civil War South as a companion volume to her acclaimed work on northern medical practice.
Her publications demonstrate a consistent focus on medical photography, disease treatment, and the development of public health practices during the Civil War era. Through analysis of surgical documentation, medical photography, and disease patterns, her scholarship reveals how crisis-driven innovation during the war catalyzed lasting medical advancements.
