Shaun O. Smart

Dr. Shaun O. Smart is an Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology at McGovern Medical School, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). He serves in multiple leadership roles including Division Chief of Inpatient Neurology at Memorial Hermann Hospital - Texas Medical Center, Medical Director of the Neurohospitalist Fellowship Program, and Director of Continuous EEG Operations at both UTHealth and Memorial Hermann Hospital.

Dr. Smart's educational background includes undergraduate degrees in Biomedical Engineering, Physics, and Philosophy from the University of Miami Honors College, followed by his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School. He completed his Neurology residency at the University of South Florida and a two-year fellowship in Neurophysiology and Epilepsy at Duke University. Prior to his current position, he worked at Baptist Hospital in Miami as Assistant Medical Director of the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and at Palmetto General Hospital as Medical Director of the Epilepsy division.

His clinical expertise spans neurohospitalist medicine with a specialized focus on epilepsy and status epilepticus (both convulsive and non-convulsive). Dr. Smart's work with Continuous EEG Operations demonstrates his commitment to advanced neurological monitoring in hospital settings. His research interests align closely with his clinical work, particularly in the areas of continuous EEG monitoring for seizure detection and management of status epilepticus.
