Shaun O'Leary is an Associate Professor in Physiotherapy at the University of Queensland's School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and holds a joint appointment at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital Physiotherapy Department. He is a Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist and Fellow of the Australian College of Physiotherapists (ACP). His roles include teaching in postgraduate musculoskeletal physiotherapy programs since 2001 and leading national initiatives for the ACP, including chairing the Fellowships Program Standing Committee. In 2021, he was awarded a Senior Fellowship (SFHEA) from the Higher Education Academy.
Education: Shaun holds a BPHTY (Honors) from the University of Queensland, an MPHTY (Musculoskeletal) from the same institution, and a PhD in musculoskeletal biomechanics.
Research Interests: His work focuses on musculoskeletal conditions, particularly neck pain and its management, clinical education, telehealth implementation, and advanced practice models in musculoskeletal care. He has authored/co-authored over 110 research articles, 6 book chapters, and 2 internationally translated books, including Management of Neck Pain Disorders and Whiplash, Headache, and Neck Pain.
Publications and Impact: His research has informed clinical practice globally, including the development of state-wide advanced practice musculoskeletal services in Queensland, which have attracted AUD$6 million in grant funding. Collaborative studies on telehealth implementation across 7 hospitals received a High Commendation in the Metro-North Implementation Research Award. His work on neck pain rehabilitation and GLA:D® implementation in public hospitals has furthered evidence-based care.
Awards: Recognized nationally and internationally, Shaun has received the American Physical Therapy Association Award (2010), Australian Physiotherapy Association Award (2009), and the Metro North Hospital Health Service Implementation Research Award (2018).
Advising and Grants: He has supervised 13 research students and contributed to AUD$6 million in grant funding. His research teams collaborate on topics like musculoskeletal service models, telehealth efficacy, and neck pain biomechanics.
Labs and Teams: Active in interdisciplinary research groups at the University of Queensland and Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, focusing on musculoskeletal rehabilitation and clinical innovation.
