Shastri Akella is an Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at Michigan State University. His debut novel The Sea Elephants was published by Flatiron Books (USA/Canada), Penguin (India), and Tramp Press (UK/Ireland). He holds an MFA in Creative Writing and PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
His research interests include creative writing pedagogy, contemporary world literature, and world/genre film studies. He has taught at institutions like UMass Amherst, Bryant University, and Deerfield Academy, alongside residencies at the Fine Arts Works Center (2021) and Oak Springs Garden Foundation (2023).
Award-winning writer, Akella has won the 2022 FracturedLit Flash Fiction Contest and 2023 Best Microfiction Contest. His works appear in Guernica, Fairy Tale Review, and Electric Literature.
His teaching philosophy emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, blending literature, film, and creative practice. He has delivered talks at the University of Alabama Huntsville, Hollins University, and others, showcasing his commitment to literary outreach.
