Sharon E. Wise is Dean of Natural Sciences and Math and Professor of Biology at Utica University. She holds a B.S. in Zoology from the University of Florida, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Biology and Environmental/Evolutionary Biology from the University of Louisiana, Lafayette. Her research focuses on behavioral ecology, particularly aggression, communication, and light pollution effects in red-backed salamanders (Plethodon cinereus).
Wise investigates how factors like body condition, resource availability, and artificial lighting influence salamander behavior and distribution. Her work combines field studies and laboratory experiments to examine territorial conflicts, nocturnal activity patterns, and environmental impacts. She mentors undergraduate researchers and offers opportunities for student collaboration in her ongoing projects.
Her publications demonstrate consistent focus on amphibian ecology, with recent work examining maternal investment and light pollution. She received the Dr. Virgil Crisafulli Distinguished Teaching Award in 2011.
