Sharon Rider is a Professor in Theoretical Philosophy at Uppsala University, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts. Her research focuses on social epistemology, vulnerability in education, and the philosophy of higher education, drawing on 19th and 20th-century European thought. She has held leadership roles including Deputy Director of the HERO Center and member of SIDA’s Scientific Advisory Board. Rider holds a Ph.D. from Uppsala University (1999) and has authored influential works like Avoiding the Subject and Den tveksamme bekännaren.
Her education includes degrees from Penn State University, Université catholique de Louvain, and Uppsala University. She teaches advanced courses in philosophy, ethics, and higher education governance. Key projects include the ERC-funded “Constitutive Concealment” and collaborations with the Engaging Vulnerability program.
Rider’s recent work critiques neoliberal influences on academia and advocates for institutional pluralism. She has organized conferences on academic freedom and authored over 100 publications. Her current research explores democratic theory and the role of universities in contemporary society.
Grants include leadership of the “Very Idea of a University” project (RJ, 2019–2020) and co-editing volumes like World Class Universities: A Contested Concept. She advises doctoral students in philosophy, education, and sociology, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to knowledge and ethics.
Rider co-leads the HERO Center and directs research on higher education futures. She is a frequent media commentator on academic policy and has published op-eds on topics like “The Corrosion of Academic Character” and “Vulnerability in Public Discourse.”
