Louise Berglund is a Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor in History at Uppsala University, specializing in late medieval political and religious culture, as well as historical writing within the early women’s movement. She teaches at all academic levels and supervises theses, drawing from her extensive research on gender, authority, and queenship in the Nordic realms from c. 1300–1500.
Research Focus includes:
- Medieval female authority through analysis of St Birgitta and queens like Philippa of England, Blanche of Namur, and Margareta I
- Gender equality in historical writing from 1850–1920
- Political ideals in Vadstena Abbey (ca 1370–1470)
- Intersections of democracy and women’s inclusion in academic history
Funding and Collaborations:
- Swedish Foundation for Humanities and Social Sciences (RJ) sabbatical grant (2015–2017)
- Visiting researcher at Saxo Institute (Copenhagen), Somerville College (Oxford), Institut d'Études Médiévales (Louvain-la-Neuve), and Swedish Institute (Paris)
- Current project (2025–2027) within Uppsala’s Democracy and Higher Education program
Publications include co-authoring the textbook Historikerns hantverk and contributions to En samtidig världshistoria. Her work embeds queenship analysis in ideological, communicative, and material culture frameworks.
