Sharon Herbert holds the Charles K Williams II Distinguished University Professorship and John G Pedley Collegiate Professorship in Classical Archaeology at the University of Michigan. She serves as Professor in the Department of Classical Studies and Curator of Greek and Hellenistic Collections at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology, where she previously served as Director (1997–2013). Her research focuses on Hellenistic-era cultural interactions, particularly Phoenician cultural traces in the Near East and Egypt, with fieldwork in Israel, Egypt, Greece, and Italy.
Her excavations include Tel Anafa (Upper Galilee), Coptos (Egypt), and ongoing work at Kedesh (co-directed with Andrea Berlin). She has held leadership roles as Department Chair and Director of the Interdepartmental Program in Classical Art and Archaeology. Current projects emphasize material culture analysis and publication of Hellenistic-era sites linked to Phoenician Tyre's hinterland.
Her work bridges classical archaeology with museum curation, combining fieldwork, artifact analysis, and historical interpretation. She actively collaborates on international excavations and contributes to archaeological education through museum initiatives and student training programs.
