Sharon Harrison is Professor of Economics at Barnard College, where she has been a faculty member since 1997. She serves as Program Director for the New Pathways Bridgewater Scholars Program and maintains an active research agenda focused on macroeconomics and unintended consequences.
Her academic background includes a B.S. from Tufts University and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Northwestern University. Professor Harrison teaches courses in macroeconomics, statistics, and econometrics, including specialized offerings such as First Year Seminar: Chaos, Intermediate Macroeconomics, and Mathematical Methods for Economics.
Professor Harrison's research centers on applied econometrics, business cycle theory, indeterminacy and sunspots in macroeconomics, and behavioral economics. She has recently established the Unintended Consequences Lab with collaborators Pietro Battiston and Loran Chollete, reflecting her growing interest in how policies and interventions can lead to unexpected outcomes.
Her publication record demonstrates consistent scholarly activity in macroeconomic theory, with numerous articles in prestigious journals such as the Journal of Economic Theory, Journal of Monetary Economics, and Macroeconomic Dynamics. Her work often examines how sector-specific externalities, progressive taxation, and credit frictions can create indeterminacy in economic models.
Professor Harrison maintains an active blog where she interviews researchers about unintended consequences across various fields, from the impact of child care regulations to the effects of school closures during the pandemic. This public engagement demonstrates her commitment to making economic research accessible and highlighting the complex, often unexpected, outcomes of policy interventions.
As Program Director for the New Pathways Bridgewater Scholars Program, she contributes to institutional initiatives supporting student success and academic achievement at Barnard College.
