معرفی
Dr. Jill Ann Harrison is Associate Professor of Sociology in the University of Oregon’s College of Arts and Sciences. She is on sabbatical during Fall 2024, continuing her long-standing investigation into the intersection of work, place, and environmental change.
Education:
- B.A. in Sociology, Youngstown State University (2000)
- Ph.D. in Sociology, Ohio State University (2009)
Research Interests:
Professor Harrison’s scholarship centers on the local consequences of globalization, deindustrialization, and environmental disruption. Using ethnographic and qualitative methods, she examines how workers and communities re-fashion identities, economic strategies, and social ties when traditional industries collapse or are radically transformed. Her work spans shrimp-fishing communities on the Louisiana bayou, post-industrial Rust Belt cities, and low-wage retail and transportation sectors.
Publication Patterns:
Across more than fifteen refereed articles and a monograph, Harrison’s recent output clusters around two themes: (1) the lived experience of workers confronting global economic restructuring—whether shrimpers facing import competition, Walmart associates seeking respect, or truckers navigating deregulation; and (2) critical scrutiny of scholarly metrics and institutional practices that shape academic careers. Her 2012 book Buoyancy on the Bayou anchors the first theme, while her 2025 article on h-index inequality exemplifies the second.
