Sharon Gerecht is the Paul M. Gross Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Duke University, affiliated with the Duke Cancer Institute. She leads the Gerecht Lab focused on regenerative medicine, vascular biology, and biomaterials engineering. Her research explores how microenvironmental cues regulate cellular responses to develop therapeutic strategies for tissue regeneration and disease.
Dr. Gerecht holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the Israel Institute of Technology (2004). She is a Fellow of the American Heart Association, AAAS, and AIBME, and a member of the National Academy of Medicine. Her honors include the President's Frontier Award and the Patrick C. Walsh Prostate Cancer Research Fund.
Research interests include engineering biomaterials to study blood vessel formation, hypoxia's role in cancer, and vascular aging. Her lab develops 3D models for disease modeling and regenerative therapies, with over 300 publications. Notable contributions include hydrogel systems for vascular regeneration and iPSC-derived vascular networks.
Her lab includes over 20 graduate students and postdocs, with alumni in academic and industry roles. Projects span from developing vascularized tissues to understanding ECM mechanics in disease.
