Sharon DeWitte is a Professor and Director of Graduate Studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder, affiliated with the Institute of Behavioral Science and the Department of Anthropology. Her research focuses on reconstructing health, disease, and demography in past populations through bioarchaeological analysis of skeletal remains, particularly during historical epidemics like the Black Death.
- PhD from Pennsylvania State University (2006)
- Expertise in paleodemography, paleoepidemiology, and bioarchaeology
- Specializes in mortality patterns during medieval and industrial-era health crises
Her work integrates hazard modeling to explore heterogeneous frailty, selective mortality, and the social, economic, and biological factors influencing disease outcomes. She has examined the Black Death, post-Conquest Roman Britain, and Industrial-era London. Recent publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches, including stable isotope analysis and genetic studies of pathogens.
Key research themes from her publications include:
- Urbanization and health disparities
- Intersectionality of sex, socioeconomic status, and disease
- Lessons from historical epidemics for modern pandemic resilience
- Frailty, survivorship, and demographic transitions across eras
