Shantanu Hemachandra Joshi is an Associate Professor-in-Residence in the Department of Neurology at the David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California Los Angeles. His work bridges computational neuroscience, neuroimaging, and clinical applications with a focus on understanding brain development and disorders through advanced imaging techniques.
Dr. Joshi's research interests primarily center on neuroimaging analysis, particularly in the areas of brain connectivity, structural MRI, and computational methods for understanding neurological conditions. His work spans multiple domains including the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on brain development, HIV-related brain changes in pediatric populations, and the neural mechanisms of depression treatment with ketamine. He has developed sophisticated computational approaches for analyzing white matter tractography, brain connectivity networks, and structural changes in various neurological conditions.
His publications reveal a strong focus on South African birth cohort studies examining how prenatal exposures (alcohol, tobacco, HIV) impact brain development and cognitive outcomes in children. He also investigates the neural correlates of depression treatment response, particularly with ketamine, and has developed novel computational methods for neuroimaging analysis. His work combines rigorous computational approaches with clinical neuroscience applications, making significant contributions to both methodology development and clinical understanding.
Dr. Joshi serves as Principal Investigator on multiple NIH-funded research projects including 'Brain Connectivity Signatures of Behavior and Cognition in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy' (R21NS125184), 'Tracking and Prediction of Early Brain-Face Biomarkers of Prenatal Alcohol Exposure from Neonates to Children' (R01AA026834), and 'Modeling of Joint Face-Brain dysmorphology in fetal alcohol spectrum disorder' (K25AA024192). His research team collaborates extensively with South African institutions on longitudinal studies of pediatric brain development.
