Shannon Millikin is an Associate Professor of Instruction in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Northwestern University, affiliated with the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. She holds an M.A. in Hispanic Studies from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Her research focuses on second language acquisition, task-based methodologies, phonetics/phonology, and Spanish for professional contexts. She emphasizes comprehensible input, interpersonal communication, and intercultural competence in her teaching, which spans elementary to graduate-level courses.
Shannon has secured multiple grants including six Weinberg Hewlett Grants and a WCAS Curricular Funding Grant for projects like 'A Seat at the Table for Afro-Latinx Voices' and 'Colombian Partnerships for Spanish Language and Cultural Competence.' She actively contributes to academic organizations such as the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) and the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).
In addition to her teaching, she serves as Spanish Placement Coordinator, Assistant Director of the Spanish Language Program, and mentor for graduate students. She also advises the student group Knitwestern and chairs the 2025 Central States Conference on 'Global Goals, Global Languages.'
