Shannon Erickson Lee is a full-time Lecturer in the Department of Biology at Sonoma State University since 2012. She holds a Ph.D. from UCLA (2002) under advisors Dr. David K. Jacobs and Dr. Ruth Gates. Her expertise spans invertebrate zoology, marine ecology, and evolutionary developmental genetics. While no longer maintaining an active research program, she contributes to teaching innovation and curriculum development, emphasizing active learning and pedagogical technology.
Key educational roles include creating the 'HandsOn Integrative Science Time' program (2009–present) and teaching courses such as Marine Biology, Invertebrate Biology, and Ecology & Evolution. Her teaching spans institutions like CSU Northridge (2003–2009) and UCLA (2002–2004). She focuses on non-traditional student engagement through programs like Upward Bound (1998–2002).
Publications emphasize molecular protocols for gene isolation in invertebrates and developmental genetics of molluscs. Her work bridges evolutionary biology and molecular mechanisms, with contributions to understanding Distal-less gene expression patterns.
Office hours are held Tues/Thurs 2:30–4:00 PM in Darwin 222, with virtual/in-person availability by appointment.
