Shannon E. French is a full professor of philosophy at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) and holds a secondary appointment in the School of Law. She is the Inamori Professor in Ethics and directs the Inamori International Center for Ethics and Excellence, overseeing the first U.S. Master’s program in military ethics. Her research focuses on military ethics, including conduct of war, ethical leadership, neuroethics, and the intersection of emerging technologies with ethics. She has authored influential books like The Code of the Warrior and serves on editorial boards for journals such as the International Journal of Ethical Leadership. She also consults for the Institute for Defense Analysis and holds the General Hugh Shelton Distinguished Chair in Ethics at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College Foundation.
French’s academic journey includes 11 years at the U.S. Naval Academy, where she was tenured and served as Associate Chair of Leadership, Ethics, and Law before joining CWRU in 2008. Her work bridges theoretical ethics with practical applications in military, corporate, and technological domains. She explores topics like AI in military decision-making, neurointerventions, and moral injury prevention, advocating for ethical frameworks in rapidly evolving contexts.
Her scholarly awards include the Inamori Professorship and Shelton Chair, reflecting her contributions to military ethics and ethical leadership.
