Dr. Cannella's research focuses on modern Chinese literature, particularly analyzing how narrative perception and listening practices construct empathetic modern identities in works by Shen Congwen and Zhang Ailing. Her work extends to Chinese environmental literature and film, examining how writers use Confucian, Taoist, and Buddhist concepts within global ecological frameworks to question human relationships with place and environmental stewardship.
As a language educator, she emphasizes immersive, supportive learning environments and strategies that demystify Chinese language logic. She has collaborated with Concordia Language Villages' Sen Lin Hu Chinese immersion program for six years, advocating for experiential language acquisition. Her teaching philosophy centers on cultural competence, stating: 'Learning a language is essentially about building relationships' across historical, political, and cultural contexts.
