Dr. Shannan Mattiace is a Professor of Political Science at Allegheny College, where she has taught since 1999. She holds a Ph.D. in Government from the University of Texas, Austin, and a B.A. in Political Science from Central College, Iowa, where she later received an honorary doctorate in 2021.

Her 2019 Fulbright Scholarship enabled teaching and research in Chile. Collaborations include work with scholars from the University of Notre Dame, CIDE (Mexico City), and the Great Lakes Colleges Association. Notable publications include a 2019 article on indigenous resistance to narco rule and a 2022 study on Yucatán's low homicide rates. She co-authored foundational books on Maya communities and labor practices in Chiapas and Yucatán.
