Dr Shani Tobias is a Lecturer in Translation Studies and Education Coordinator at the Monash Intercultural Lab (MIL), Monash University. She served as Director of the Master of Interpreting and Translation Studies from 2020 to 2023 and is actively involved in research, teaching, and supervision in translation and interpreting.
Her educational background includes a PhD in Japanese-English literary translation, focusing on metaphor translation. Her research bridges literary, cultural, and pedagogical dimensions of translation.
Dr Tobias’s research interests span Translation Studies, Japanese-English and Chinese-English literary translation, translation of metaphor and style, cultural translation, and translator and interpreter pedagogy. She also investigates professional development in the translation field and intercultural exchange.
Her recent publications reflect a strong trend in classical Chinese literature translation, cultural dissemination, and professional development across Anglophone countries, particularly Australia. She has co-edited volumes and published on Jin Ping Mei, Australian children’s literature in China, and online intercultural learning (COIL).
She has been recognized with the Victoria’s Multicultural Awards for Excellence (2010).
