Dr. Shangtong Yang is a Reader in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Strathclyde's Faculty of Engineering. His research centers on mechanical properties of civil engineering materials—particularly rock-like substances such as concrete and rock—under complex loading and environmental conditions, aiming to develop constitutive models for engineering applications.
His expertise spans fracture mechanics, durability of civil infrastructure, and failure prediction for whole-life management. Current work addresses thermal damage in crystalline rocks, corrosion mechanisms in reinforced concrete, and energy applications like mine shaft thermal storage. He combines experimental techniques (X-ray micro-CT) with computational modeling and machine learning to advance sustainable infrastructure solutions.
Recent publications (2023-2025) reveal strong thematic cohesion in geomechanics and structural resilience, with emphasis on energy transition technologies (hydrogen storage, geothermal systems) and degradation processes in construction materials. Methodologically, his work integrates multi-scale analysis—from molecular dynamics to field-scale modeling—to solve practical engineering challenges.
Dr. Yang has received significant recognition:
