Christian Carloni is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Case Western Reserve University's Case School of Engineering, where he also serves as Faculty Coordinator. His research focuses on advanced composite materials and their applications in structural engineering, particularly in the context of FRP (Fiber-Reinforced Polymer) systems, masonry restoration, and concrete interface mechanics. He specializes in investigating debonding mechanisms, material interfaces, and structural strengthening techniques for civil infrastructure.
Dr. Carloni's work addresses critical challenges in construction materials, including fracture mechanics of concrete, durability of FRCM (Fiber-Reinforced Cementitious Matrix) systems, and the role of mortar matrices in masonry substrates. His research combines experimental analysis, numerical modeling (e.g., cohesive damaged contact approaches), and strain measurements to enhance the understanding of material behavior under various loading conditions. Recent studies include the development of predictive formulas for RC members strengthened with FRCM and the evaluation of salt crystallization effects on FRCM-masonry interfaces.
His publications span topics like FRP-concrete debonding mechanisms, analytical bond-slip models, and the role of width effects in fracture energy evaluation. He has collaborated extensively on projects involving steel-reinforced grout (SRG) jackets for column confinement and fatigue behavior of PBO-FRCM composites. His contributions bridge the gap between material science and structural engineering, aiming to improve the durability and safety of existing and new infrastructure systems.
