Shangfeng Du

Professor Shangfeng Du is a Professor of Electrochemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham's School of Chemical Engineering. He leads the Birmingham Electrochemical Engineering Group, focusing on energy storage and conversion technologies, including fuel cells, electrolysers, and CO₂ reduction. His research spans materials science, device design, and electrochemical engineering, with interdisciplinary collaboration through the Birmingham Energy Institute.

Education: BEng in Materials Science and Engineering (Tsinghua University, 1999); PhD in Chemical Engineering (Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2005). He held postdoctoral positions at the Max Planck Institute and joined Birmingham in 2007 as a Marie Curie Research Fellow. He became a Professor in 2024.

Research interests include low-temperature fuel cells, water electrolysis, electrochemical CO₂ reduction, and zinc-air batteries. His work emphasizes catalyst development, electrode design, and device fabrication. He serves as an Associate Editor for Frontiers in Nanotechnology and on editorial boards of Scientific Reports, Journal of Power Sources, and Automotive Innovation.

Publications focus on electrocatalyst optimization, electrode architectures, and energy conversion systems. He has authored/co-authored over 70 papers, patents, and reviews. His group actively collaborates with industry and academia globally.
