Shane Thomas

Associate Professor Shane Thomas is a biochemist and vascular biologist at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), affiliated with the School of Medical Sciences and leading the Department of Pathology. He co-leads the Cardiovascular and Metabolic Disease Research Group and has secured over $8.5 million in competitive grants since 2005, including NHMRC, MRFF, and National Heart Foundation funding.

His research focuses on:

• Developing nanotechnological therapies to target oxidative stress and inflammation in cardiovascular disease.
• Understanding redox reactions and endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndMT) in vascular dysfunction.
• Elucidating post-translational regulation of the immune-modulatory enzyme IDO1.

Key awards include the UNSW Postgraduate Research Supervisor Award (2014), Ross Hohnen Award (2005), and New England Cardiovascular Postdoctoral Research Award (2001). He teaches cardiovascular disease mechanisms and supervises biomedical students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
