Shane Brown is a Professor and Associate Head of Graduate Affairs in the Department of Civil and Construction Engineering at Oregon State University (OSU). He holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (OSU, 2005), M.S. in Environmental Engineering (UC Davis, 1998), and B.S. in Civil Engineering (OSU, 1995). His research focuses on engineering education, particularly cognitive learning theories, faculty decision-making in teaching, and student engagement strategies. He has secured over $10.5M in research funding as PI/Co-PI and authored 80+ peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Brown is a licensed professional engineer and an ASCE Fellow.
His research explores conceptual change challenges in transportation engineering and fluid mechanics, comparing academic and workplace problem-solving approaches. He develops evidence-based instructional practices (EBIPs) to improve student engagement and conceptual mastery. Notable awards include the NSF CAREER Award, OSU Teaching Excellence Award, and ASCE ExCEEd New Faculty Teaching Award. His Engineering Cognition Lab investigates how contextual factors influence engineering education and practice.
