Shane A. Shapiro, M.D., is a Consultant in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, and holds the academic rank of Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. He serves as the Medical Director of the Regenerative Medicine Therapeutics Program within the Mayo Clinic Center for Regenerative Medicine, where he leads innovative research in orthobiologic and regenerative therapies.
His educational background includes:
- BS in Psychology, Brown University (1996)
- MD, University of Virginia School of Medicine (2001)
- Residency in Family Medicine, Mayo Clinic (2004)
- Fellowship in Sports Medicine, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science (2005)
- Pre-Doctoral Research at NIH’s National Center for Human Genome Research (1996–1997)
Dr. Shapiro is an early adopter and pioneer in regenerative medicine, focusing on novel therapies for chronic musculoskeletal and nonhealing tissue conditions. His research includes cell-based treatments for arthritis, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for tendinopathies, and biological applications for chronic wounds. He is the principal investigator of the world's first randomized controlled trial of bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells (BMAC) for knee osteoarthritis and serves as sponsor-investigator for nine FDA investigational new drug (IND) applications. His work emphasizes mobilizing the body’s innate healing mechanisms where conventional surgery is not viable.
His recent research, including co-authored clinical studies, centers on exercise-related physiological responses, particularly electrolyte imbalances in endurance athletes. This reflects a broader interest in sports medicine and the pathophysiology of overuse injuries.
His scientific awards and honors include:
- Health Care Heroes Award, Jacksonville Business Journal (2017)
- Pre-Doctoral Intramural Research Training Award, NIH (1996–1997)
- Multiple resident research awards from Mayo Clinic and national organizations (2002–2004)
Dr. Shapiro is actively involved in mentoring, research collaboration, and grant-supported clinical trials. He leads cross-specialty initiatives through the Center for Regenerative Biotherapeutics, partnering with dermatology, ophthalmology, and voice medicine. He also investigates ethical implications and patient decision-making in regenerative therapies with colleagues like Dr. Zubin Master and Jennifer R. Arthurs. His leadership extends to national organizations, including chairing the Regenerative Medicine Sub-Committee of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and serving on the board of the Biologic Association.
He directs the Regenerative Medicine Therapeutics Program and is a founding member of the Florida Organization for Regenerative Medicine (FORM), demonstrating sustained institutional and professional engagement.
