Shanan Peters is a Professor of Geoscience at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, leading the Macrostrat Lab. His research focuses on quantifying continental and global-scale rock records to understand Earth's co-evolutionary systems. He integrates macrostratigraphy with field studies in sedimentology and paleontology, emphasizing carbon cycle dynamics, climate change, and tectonic influences.
Key projects include the North American rock-fossil covariance study, eODP ocean drilling data synthesis, and the development of GeoDeepDive for automated geoscientific data extraction. His work bridges geological mapping (e.g., British Isles-Avalonia comparisons) with big data initiatives to model Earth system processes over deep time.
Peters advises graduate students in field-oriented stratigraphy and quantitative geospatial analysis. He has received the 2014 Charles Schuchert Award for paleontological contributions. His teaching includes courses on evolution, sedimentology, and carbonate geology.
Collaborative efforts involve the Paleobiology Database and initiatives like EarthRates, linking sedimentary crust scales. His lab develops tools such as the Macrostrat data system and Sparrow laboratory information management for geochemical data integration.
