Jon Husson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of Victoria. He is currently on leave. His research focuses on Earth history, stratigraphy, and the geochemistry of sedimentary carbonates, with expertise in stable isotope geochemistry and U-Pb geochronology. He holds a BA from Harvard University, and MA and PhD from Princeton University. His work integrates field observations, geochemical data, and computational methods to study Earth's geological and biogeochemical processes. Key projects include examining carbonate geochemistry's local and global controls, quantifying sedimentary rock accumulation patterns via the Macrostrat database, and leveraging the GeoDeepDive digital library for large-scale data analysis.
His research group explores the interplay between sedimentary records and Earth system evolution, particularly in understanding carbon cycle dynamics and the geological mechanisms shaping habitability. Recent work includes studies on the Shuram carbon isotope excursion, Triassic-Jurassic boundary events, and the Phanerozoic evolution of dolomite abundance. Collaborations emphasize computational tools to synthesize geological data and address questions of planetary-scale environmental change.
