Shana J. Brown is an Associate Professor of History and Director of the University Honors Program at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. She holds a BA from Amherst College (1993) and a PhD from UC Berkeley (2003). Her work bridges science, culture, and gender in modern China, with a focus on transnational and comparative frameworks. Current research projects include women intellectuals in modern China, wartime photography technology, and the history of infectious disease in US-China relations.
Her teaching portfolio includes courses like 'World History of Human Disease' and 'Twentieth-Century China,' emphasizing transnational perspectives. She has held a predoctoral fellowship at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin, and her major publications include Pastimes (2011) and numerous articles on gender, visual culture, and intellectual history.
