Shalabh C. Maroo is a Professor and Graduate Program Director in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Syracuse University's L. C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science. He leads the Multiscale Research & Engineering Laboratory (MREL) and holds affiliations with the Syracuse Center of Excellence. Previously promoted to Associate Professor in 2017 and to Full Professor in 2023, his academic leadership includes directing graduate programs and securing significant research funding.
His educational background includes a Post-doctoral Associate position in Mechanical Engineering at MIT (2010-2011), Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Florida (2009), M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Florida (2006), and B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay (2003).
Professor Maroo's research spans thermal management, heat transfer, nano and micro-technology, energy conversion, and desalination. His work focuses on fundamental aspects of science and engineering that manifest into applications in energy efficiency and water security. The MREL research group conducts highly multidisciplinary work combining experiments, nano/micro scale fabrication, and molecular and continuum numerical simulations. Their research addresses critical global challenges including increasing global energy demands and water stress, with projects on thermal management of photovoltaics, high heat flux dissipation, and water desalination technologies.
His scientific contributions have been recognized with prestigious awards including the NSF CAREER Award (2015) and the MAE Department's Excellence in Education Award (2023). Professor Maroo has secured multiple major research grants from NSF, ONR, and other funding agencies, including the SyracuseCoE Faculty Fellows grant in 2023.
- NSF CAREER Award (2015)
- MAE Department's Excellence in Education Award (2023)
- SyracuseCoE Faculty Fellows grant (2023)
- NSF funding on 'Experimental validation of molecular simulation of water transport across zeolite membranes of nanoscale-thickness' (Award #1705752)
- ONR funding on 'Phase Change in High-Density Confined Liquids for Thermal Management'
Professor Maroo has mentored numerous graduate and undergraduate students through the Multiscale Research & Engineering Laboratory, with many of his former students securing prestigious positions at institutions including Argonne National Lab, University of Florida, MIT, and leading technology companies. His research group has received multiple All University Doctoral Prizes and other recognitions for their work on oscillating heat pipes, nanochannel evaporators, and other thermal management technologies.
The MREL laboratory is equipped for advanced research in thermal management, water desalination, and bio-mechanical systems, with capabilities in molecular dynamics simulation, nano/micro fabrication, and experimental testing of thermal systems. The lab collaborates with facilities at the Syracuse Biomaterials Institute, Cornell NanoScale Science & Technology Facility, and Cornell Center for Materials Research.
