Shakila Yacob is a Research Fellow at Philipps University of Marburg, where she served as a Visiting Fellow (February–August 2023) during the university's 3rd Funding Period (2022–2025). She previously held significant administrative roles at the University of Malaya including Executive Director of the International Institute of Public Policy and Management (INPUMA; 2018–2021), Director of the Center for Civilisational Dialogue (2016–2018), Head of the Department of History (2014–2015), and Deputy Director of INPUMA (2006–2009, 2011–2012). She taught a course on Decolonisation and the Dynamics of Security in Southeast Asia at Philipps Universität Marburg in Summer 2023.
Her research explores the intersection of economic history and political economy in Southeast Asia, with focus areas including:
- Security dynamics of German firms in post-colonial Southeast Asia
- State-led development in Malaysia's oil palm sector
- Multinational corporations and climate change
- Historical evolution of Islamic banking
Her publications predominantly analyze historical business strategies, colonial legacies, and resource politics in Malaysia. Recent works investigate oil sovereignty, palm oil lobbying, colonial iron ore development, and corporate adaptation to economic policies, reflecting consistent themes of decolonization impacts and state-business relations across 2010–2021.
