Shaik O. Rahaman is a tenured Professor in the Department of Nutrition and Food Science at the University of Maryland (since 2023). His career at UMD spans from Assistant Professor (2014-2019) to Associate Professor (2019-2023). He was previously affiliated with the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and Lerner Research Institute (2004-2011).
- Education: PhD in Molecular Biology (Jadavpur University), MS in Biophysics and Molecular Biology (Indian Institute of Chemical Biology)
Dr. Rahaman’s research focuses on molecular signaling in inflammatory diseases like atherosclerosis and fibrosis. His lab investigates how TRPV4 calcium channels and mechanotransduction regulate fibrogenesis, atherogenesis, and macrophage/fibroblast biology using in vivo mouse models, in vitro assays, and advanced imaging techniques.
His 15 most recent publications (2022-2025) emphasize TRPV4 channel regulation, microRNA-146a in biomaterial responses, and mechanosensitive signaling in cardiovascular and fibrotic diseases. These works span biomaterials, immunology, calcium signaling, and chronic disease research.
- Grants: NIH (2022-2027, $3.6M), NSF (2017-2020, $398k), AHA (2014-2016, $308k)
- Awards: NIH R01 grants, NSF Standard Grant, UMD Research Excellence Celebration honoree (2018), AHA Beginning Grant, Cleveland Clinic Elsa Albrecht Award (2016)
Dr. Rahaman teaches courses on nutrition and chronic diseases (NFSC678F, NFSC498F, NFSC678M) and has advised numerous students/postdocs. He has served as PI or Co-PI on all major projects and actively participates in international conferences as a keynote speaker and organizing committee member.
