Shahnaz Hassan serves as an Associate Professor of Instruction in the Department of Asian Studies at the University of Texas at Austin's College of Liberal Arts, where she has taught Urdu language and literature to hundreds of students over nearly two decades.
Her academic foundation includes a Bachelor of Arts from the University of the Punjab.
Dr. Hassan's expertise spans Urdu Language & Literature with emphases on Classical and Modern Urdu Poetry, Urdu Prose, Film Studies, and Urdu/Hindi Media—including specialized analysis of Pakistani Urdu dramas and Bollywood. She actively integrates Gender Studies and Female Voices in Urdu Literature into her pedagogy, reflected in courses like Female Voices in Urdu Literature and Aesthetics of Genre in Urdu Literature. Her research bridges language pedagogy with cultural studies of South Asian media.
Her teaching career encompasses foundational Urdu language instruction (First-Year through Second-Year courses, Accelerated Urdu, and Practice in Spoken Urdu) alongside advanced literature seminars. Prior to UT Austin, she spent over a decade developing Urdu language curricula for post-doctoral candidates with UC Berkeley's program in Pakistan and began her career through the US Peace Corps Program in Pakistan.
