Shafqat Nasir

Shafqat Nasir is a Senior Lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University, affiliated with the Sociology and Social Policy disciplines. Since 1991, he has held administrative roles including Combined Honours Tutor for Sociology, Director of Studies, and Co-Leader of a joint MA in Social Policy with the University of Manchester. He holds a MPhil in Discourses of Equality (1997) and a 1st Class Honours in Applied Community Studies (1991).

His research focuses on mental illness stigma in Higher Education, psychopolitics, madness studies, language and psychosis, employment equity, and everyday racism as trauma. He has published in journals like The Journal of Mental Health and contributed chapters to critical texts on race, gender, and postcolonial theory. His work integrates discourse analysis with critical policy studies, examining institutional forces affecting staff and student well-being.

Nasir has provided consultancy to organizations including Tameside Social Services, BHAF (Black HIV/AIDS Forum), and Shades, a homelessness support group. He is a Time to Change Champion and member of professional associations like the British Sociological Association. His teaching includes supervising MA theses on Power, Politics and Policy within the joint Social Policy program.
