Seyfeddin Kara is an Assistant Professor of Islamic Origins at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Religion, Culture and Society, specializing in early Islamic studies, Quranic textual history, and sectarian dynamics. He holds a PhD from Durham University and has held roles at institutions including the University of Toronto and Hartford Seminary. His research focuses on Quranic codices, hadith authenticity, and modern manifestations of Islamophobia.
Education: PhD in Islamic Studies from Durham University (UK), supported by a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Global Fellowship.
Research interests include early Islamic history, Quranic exegesis, Sunni and Shiʿi traditions, and Muslims in Europe. Recent work addresses taqiyya (dissimulation), Qur'an textual integrity debates, and comparative parables in Gospel/Quranic literature.
Key publications include The Integrity of the Qur’an (2024) and In Search of Ali ibn Abi Talib's Codex (2018). He has secured grants from EU, SSHRC, and other bodies.
Advising: Currently supervising PhD projects on Sunni-Shiʿi sectarianism and comparative Muslim-Jewish legal studies.
